Nordeast Bars by Perfect Landing
Endorsing Northeast Minneapolis drinking establishments, but not usage of the nickname “Nordeast.” I have yet to hear anyone who actually lives in Northeast use the word… (correct me if I’m wrong)

Police Investigate Cougar Sighting In Minneapolis →
Wow, apparently there’s a cougar sauntering through my neighborhood. Hot.
When Norm Mosher was driving home from work Monday morning, he saw what he thought was a golden retriever crossing the road in Northeast Minneapolis near along St. Anthony Parkway near Marshall Avenue.
It was only when the long-time outdoorsman got up close that he realized it was a cat by the way it walked. Its long tail was swinging.
“Cats move in a more sultry manner I guess, people call it slinking,” said Mosher. “I call it sauntering.”Amen Brother.

John Knowles and Jonathan Olson, playing “Thank You Dear Jesus” on the back of the Creative Electric Studios houseboat on the mighty Mississippi.
The boat was stationed on the docks behind The Sample Room during Art-a-Whirl, and housed a strange and wonderful installation called “Infinite Regress” — a sort of carnival fun-house meets The X-Files meets Deliverance experience. I was there with some friends recording for the Northeast Audio Walking Tour, as The Sample Room (formerly the Polish Palace, and before that a tasting room for the Grain Belt Brewery) is on our tour.

Is there hope for decent cheap food on 13th Ave NE?
Yes, we’ve had the Modern Cafe for quite some time now, but while their food is certainly tasty, it’s also a bit pricy. And I do kind of enjoy 331’s bean tacos, but they get old pretty quickly. My hopes were lifted with the appearance of the Northeast Social Club — but while my fries and okra were served in a red plastic basket, they also came with chard to serve as a “palette cleanser” (?!) and thus were priced accordingly.
Where can I look to when I come home drunk and hungry? Where can I run to when I’m too lazy to cook dinner, but too cheap to pay for a fancy meal? It’s possible I’m being a bit too optimistic, but maybe with their promised “affordable prices” and take-away option, The Anchor will be the one. Keep those fingers crossed…

One of the things I’ve been meaning to write about here for a while is the Northeast Audio Walking Tour Workshop, which I have been participating in for several weeks. It’s a diverse group of 25 Northeasters, and the goal is produce three different audio tours of Northeast Minneapolis.
The group I’m working with is mainly covering the Bottineau Neighborhood, and one of the stops on that tour is Jax Cafe. Jax has been in the Kozlak family since 1910, and is quite a fixture here in NE. Their website has a decent amount of historical information, including a menu from bygone days that features $1.75 sirloin steak and a healthy selection of booze — I’m intrigued by the “Zombie (???)” under “Fancy Drinks.”
So here’s where you come in. I’m hoping to get a few folks who have encountered the Jax Cafe patio to recount their experiences on tape. This would be a pretty minimal time commitment, and part of your interview would hopefully end up on the audio tour — which will be available in NE libraries and as a podcast in August.

Shuga Records Coming to 13th Ave NE →
I ran into these guys the other night, they were unloading a moving truck into what used to be the Minnesota Center for Photography. With the Northeast Social Club opening on the other end of 13th Ave, things are looking up for my little neighborhood!
When I asked what they planned on selling, their answer was simply “cheap vinyl.” Sounds good to me — maybe now I won’t end up listening to The Stranger every other time I want to use my record player.
