"You enter the Atlantic Avenue Tunnel via a ladder through a manhole in the middle of Atlantic Avenue. Traffic is blocked off, but you should definitely wear comfortable shoes and those who are incapable of climbing up and down a 10 feet ladder should not plan on attending the event. We apologize for this, but there is absolutely no other way to enter or exit the tunnel. You must sign a liability waiver before entering the tunnel (forms will be available at the entrance). There are no chairs in the tunnel. We will put down tarps to sit on, and you are also welcome to bring small cushions (nothing too big, please). There are no bathrooms in the tunnel. You should use a restroom before you enter."

"Yet, in terms of how we’ve gone about building the archive, if we had to ask for permission, we wouldn’t exist. Because we have no money, we don’t ask permission. Asking permission always involves paperwork and negotiations, lawyers, and bank accounts. Yuk. But by doing things the wrong way, we’ve been able to pretty much overnight build an archive that’s made publically accessible for free of charge to anyone."

If you’ve ever wondered how UbuWeb gets permission for all of the content they’re hosting, the answer is simple: they don’t.

Check out our promo for the upcoming Kabaret! You should come — the more the merrier.

mnkino:

Hey there, friends—

We’ve got something big coming up this month — the first ever MNKINO Kabaret! What’s a Kabaret? Well basically it’s a weekend of filmmaking and fun, and it’s happening July 23-25 at the West Bank Social Center.

We’re having an open screening at 8pm on Friday the 23rd, after which we’ll announce the Mystery Meat (theme), and you have 48 hours to make a video. We invite you to set up at the WBSC day or night during the weekend, and make the best of it.

Keeping this one short but sweet, but you can check our website for more details. Hope to see you there!

OK, maybe you knew this already knew this, but somebody is making a movie about Ed Emberly. With this and Where the Wild Things Are, I’m starting to think my childhood is becoming a gold mine for film ideas (note that I didn’t say good film ideas). I guess I’d better hurry up and buy the movie rights for Kid Pix before it’s too late! I already know how it will end.

Sure everyone’s talking about Where the Wild Things Are. All that talk is completely warranted. I have to admit though, I’m REALLY looking forward to taking my daughter to Roald Dahl’s The Fantastic Mr. Fox, brought to life by Wes Anderson. I love Roald Dahl, I love Wes Anderson, this really is going to be a win, win.
Agreed.

The film presumably shows a fast-paced tracking shot through the tunnel in which Lady Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales, died in a car crash. At first the viewer seems to remember seeing these images in the media. But in reality the set is a true to life, cardboard mock-up of architectural details. Under closer inspection, one also realizes that instead of reproducing reality Thomas Demand creates a perfectly-constructed model world.
