This is exciting stuff, wish I’d been in MPLS to check out the prototype!

Shanai and I built something (more photos).
We’ll build it again on Saturday and then again on Sunday. We hope you’ll stop by and contribute a movement to our new museum.

Come ghost hunting at the West Bank Social Center! This month’s rent party just happens to fall on All Hallows’ Eve, so we’re exploring the space and exposing its supernatural elements. We’ll also be presenting results from a smaller, all-night paranormal inquiry that took place last Saturday.
You can participate by swapping real-life ghost stories, practicing divination techniques, making ectoplasm, and snapping spirit photos with photographer Crystal Liepa.
And because hunting ghosts is hard work, there will also be music. Tunes from DJ Jonathan Ackerman and ritualistic dancing to commence at 11:30pm.
That’s next Saturday, October 31st, 9pm-2am at the WBSC. There will be a $5 cover at the door, costumes are not required.
RSVP to the Facebook event!

WBSC + MAW + You = ?

As you may have heard, somethin’s been a-happenin’ Wednesday nights at the WBSC. We’ve teamed up with Minneapolis Art on Wheels, who’ll be setting up their lab in the space every hump day and projecting onto the building across the way.

This video is from our first official Wednesday Night Social, when Miranda & I discovered a pitcher of moldy lemonade in the (unplugged) mini-fridge in the kitchen. We handed it off to the MAWs, and this is what happened.

What’s in store for tonight? I have no clue, really. Swing by and find out for yourself.

"If Obama ignited this fire to unite, then the recession is keeping it hot in 2009. As historian and Great Depression expert Robert McElvaine put it on PBS’s Newshour earlier this year: “Community-oriented values tend to come out during tough times.” This civic-minded ethos, we’re happy to report, has trickled down to the Twin Cities art scene, which has spent much of the year finding interesting—and yes, sexy—new ways to rally around art. Take the West Bank Social Center, an indie community arts center of sorts that opened last June above the Nomad World Pub in Minneapolis’s Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Like a clubhouse minus the secret knock, this free-wheelin’ venue offers gratis Wi-Fi and coffee for anyone who stops by (a few wandering creatives use it as their makeshift office), and often calls on the public to curate its events, which have varied from group naptime sessions set to European art cinema, to a discussion about death and memorial tattooing featuring death and dying expert John E. Troyer and tattoo artist Awen Briem."

Those of you who came out for our rent party Friday witnessed a milestone: the opening of the WBSC Transcription Desk. Partygoers dictated letters to Social Center secretaries, who typed, shaped phrases, and ensured the dispatches reached their intended parties.
Who got letters? Moms, friends, sworn enemies, the secretly admired… and, if you act quickly, you. We’ve got one mystery letter left, addressed to (Your Name Here).
Should it be yours? We’ll send it to the first person who emails westbanksocialcenter@gmail.com with their mailing address.

Christina Hendricks? Pshaw, we’ve got Andy Dayton!

Aw, shucks. Although I think I may have ended up less Mad Men and more Golden Girls.
