I love this. When I first moved to Wisconsin, I noticed that people would always use their hand as an an approximation of the state’s geography — the thumb being Door County and the palm being the rest of the state*. For instance, when a guy in my dorm freshman year told me he was from Footville, WI, he may have shown me on his hand (or really, his wrist).
* I’ve met Michigan natives who do the same thing.

To the bearded gent, your friend bought a white fedora - w4m - 24 (Madison - State Street)
Six years living in Madison, WI and I never found an excuse to shop at the local hat shop. Luckily, I was in town last week with my pal Jon and in search for a summer hat, so we stopped by. Now I’m plus one hat, and he’s plus one fawning missed connection:

You smiled a fantastic smile when you came into the hat store, and made more eye contact than was strictly necessary. You are adorable, with your shaggy hair, mountain-man beard, and gauged ears. When you came back into the store so your tall friend could buy a hat, it made my day. I didn’t mean to stare, but besides being cute you looked very familiar — have we met before? —the taller of the two hat girls

The question is, who got the better deal?

OK, so let’s get a little back-story here. Last summer, my good friend Adam invited me to come up to his cabin near Hayward, Wisconsin. That part isn’t exactly news, I’ve been going to this particular cabin every summer for years — even back when it actually had running water. BUT, this year we would be given the charge of completely tearing down one of the property’s two cabins.

I’m sure you can understand my giddiness at the proposition. In fact I just had to bring my camera to document the process.

Fast-forward to last Monday, 10:30pm. I was struggling to finish cutting together some found footage before the MNKINO “Non-fiction” screening the next day, and really not liking where it was going. In a desperate move, I started looking through some unlabeled MiniDV tapes to see if I could find something interesting. And then I found this.

You’ll be happy to know that the product of this video was put to good use the following weekend — although, sadly, I couldn’t be present to test it myself.

Get that full, backwoods flavor by watching the HD version at Vimeo.com.
